CommonThreadz benefit night this Thursday

20 Aug

CommonThreadz is a local Austin charity that is working to provide school uniforms for orphans and vulnerable children in Africa and other developing nations.  Join us at Ten Thousand Villages of Austin tomorrow night, Thursday, for a night benefitting this fantastic organization.  They will be selling their limited edition shirts — for each shirt you buy, CommonThreadz will give a school uniform to a child in need.  Plus, as always with our community benefit nights, a portion of proceeds from the evening will go directly to CommonThreadz.

Greeting Cards with a Message of Hope

28 Jul

Ten Thousand Villages stocks a variety of greeting cards, all of them contributing to our mission of helping people in third-world countries to become self-sufficient and lead productive lives. One set of cards is produced in Austin using photos taken by our volunteers on their travels.

The cards are produced by Norma and Jeff Van Horn, who started a non-profit organization called Grazia Forte, www.graziaforte.com. All of the profits from the cards benefit organizations that engage in micro lending. One, Glimmer of Hope, is an Austin-based organization that works specifically in Ethiopia -check it, visit their website, www.aglimmerofhope.org.

The cards have pictures depicting wildlife in east Africa. Whether you are awed by the sight of lions or delighted by baby elephants, you will be enchanted by these pictures.

A more recent addition to our card collection includes pictures of India. They include a family moving its household possessions (including a puppy) by camel in Rajasthan, to the River Ganges at Varanesi, where the faithful come to die and be cremated. There are elephants that provide tourists with access to the Amber Fort at Jaipur, and carvings on the side of the temples of Khajuraho, famous for its erotic images. And no collection would be completewithout a picture of the Taj Mahal. Taken in the early morning, it is shrouded by a light mist.

We invite to check them out at http://www.graziaforte.com. We also stock kid's placemats made from the same photos. They make great gifts - keep your grandkids entertained while they wait for their food!
