One Reason Why 2015
October is here, and you know what that means – Ten Thousand Villages’ One Reason Why: A Fair Trade Art Show is around the corner! From 7-10pm on October 16, this event features local food and drinks, international live music, one-of-a-kind art, a silent auction and a live auction, and we know you’re in for a good time!
This year’s globally inspired event will be at our NEW location on Burnet Road, right behind the store! Swag bags valued at over $100 and hand-sewn by refugees from the Multicultural Refugee Coalition will be given out to the first 175 guests. Tickets are still available online, and a limited number may be available at the door.
We have a plethora of one-of-a-kind fair trade art pieces for the show, from oil drum art from Haiti to hand-printed batiks from Nigeria (pictured below). These handcrafted metal pieces, as well as some colorful papier mâché animals, were purchased directly from the artisans of Caribbean Craft by one of our volunteers, Charlie. Caribbean Craft provides artisan training, design assistance and market assistance to help combat Haiti’s unemployment. Based in Port-au-Prince, these artisans use a variety of recycled materials including used steel drums, cement bags and used plastic bottles.
The beautiful Nigerian batiks shown on the right range from abstract geometry to everyday scenes, and can express anything from marital status to the artist’s mood. While you are browsing the fair trade art collection, live music will be provided by Rattletree School of Marimba, Come Drum for Fun, and Manuel “Cowbow” Donley.
At Ten Thousand Villages, we create opportunities for artisans to empower themselves. This year, our event will feature a Paddles Up appeal that will allow guests to further support our mission. We will also have a live auction that will include a date night for a year package, a chef-prepared meal at your own home, and a 10-day adventure tour of Chiapas, Mexico with the opportunity to meet our artisans. And there will be many more local adventures up for grabs at the Silent Auction!
One Reason Why is going to be filled with fun and it could not have been done without the wonderful help from all of our sponsors, but we’d especially like to thank Go Local, Teysha, Mitla Moda, Blue Lux, Rattletree School of Marimba, and Chiapas Birding Adventures for their generous donations!
