Awards Party & Ceremony

Joy Diaz

The results are in! Fifty local women and girls have been nominated for Ten Thousand Villages of Austin’s 2016 International Women’s Day Awards to honor their positive impacts in these categories: Humanitarian, Environment, Animal Welfare, and Emerging Changemaker (age 23 and younger). At our Awards Ceremony on April 8th, one Runner-Up and one Winner from each category will be announced by Host Joy Diaz of KUT’s “Texas Standard.”

Additionally, we will be raffling off a fabulous fair trade fashion prize with Spring clothes handmade in Ecuador, Mexico and Uganda! Also new this year, we’re creating an outdoor Sustainable Living Lounge featuring fair trade furniture and decor, plus sofas and chairs from our Burnet Road neighbors Assistance League Thrift House and Next to New, all available for purchase.

The Awards Party begins at 6:00 p.m. with happy hour, refreshments and shopping in the store (did you know that we just got plenty of new ethical fashion finds for spring?) The Awards Ceremony and announcement of Winners begins at 7:00 p.m. and the Fashion Raffle winner will be drawn at 8:30 p.m. (must be present to win). The Party and Ceremony are free with RSVP.

We are grateful and honored to have an esteemed Judges panel, which has the difficult task of selecting Runners-Up and Winners from an incredibly impressive group of nominations. Judges of this year’s Awards are: Austin City Council Member (District 7) Leslie Pool, legendary singer-songwriter Sara Hickman, and animal welfare activist Suzy Swingle. We could not have this event without their contributions!

Since 2009, we have been producing Austin’s first and only International Women’s Day Awards. It is one of our highlights every year, and we are very excited about it. Ask anyone who has attended and they will tell you: this is truly a remarkable event. It’s an uplifting, fun evening filled with camaraderie, joy and inspiration.

As our Store Director Kitty Bird says, “It’s inspiring to learn about so many amazing women in our community who are making meaningful social impacts. This event is about celebrating all of them. Through actions and influence these women and girls are distinguishing Austin as a city that’s leading in social change.”

So don’t wait, RSVP now!
