International Women’s Day is next week on March 8th! Ten Thousand Villages is very excited to celebrate this monumental day with the Austin Community. We are hosting a happy hour in our store from 5:30-7:30 next Wednesday where you can learn more about the history of International Women’s Day and how our products help support women globally.
International Women’s day began in 1909 by the Socialist Party of America in remembrance of the 1908 strike of the International Ladies Garment Worker’s Union. The next year, an international conference of working women was held in Copenhagen, Denmark where Clara Zetkin proposed the idea for an international day to celebrate women. 1911 was the first year that International Women’s Day was officially celebrated world wide. Since then women have joined on a global scale to celebrate their achievements through history while presenting demands for further advancement for gender equality. On the one hundredth anniversary of the day, former president, Barack Obama declared March to be Women’s History Month. It is a national holiday in many countries and is celebrated with parades, dinners, and other campaigns by national governments, corporations, and celebrities. This year’s theme for International Women’s day is “Be Bold For Change” follow this link to learn more about how you can be a part of International Women’s Day https://www.internationalwomensday.com/
