International Women’s day began in 1909 by the Socialist Party of America in remembrance of the 1908 strike of the International Ladies Garment Worker’s Union. The next year, an international conference of working women was held in Copenhagen, Denmark where Clara Zetkin proposed the idea for an international day to celebrate women. 1911 was the first year that International Women’s Day was officially celebrated world wide. Since then women have joined on a global scale to celebrate their achievements through history while presenting demands for further advancement for gender equality. On the one hundredth anniversary of the day, former president, Barack Obama declared March to be Women’s History Month. It is a national holiday in many countries and is celebrated with parades, dinners, and other campaigns by national governments, corporations, and celebrities. This year’s theme for International Women’s day is “Be Bold For Change” follow this link to learn more about how you can be a part of International Women’s Day
