What’s In A Neem?
Well, the ability to solve global problems. Dr. Faye of Austin-based Africa Bound Corporation introduced me to the vast ability of the neem tree to aid with digestive disorders, diabetes, high cholesterol, cancer, antiseptic, dental care, cosmetics and, of primary interest, serve as an organic insecticide.
The tree is indigenous of India and fondly referred to as the “village pharmacy.”
This humble bar of neem soap is made by the Palam Rural Centre (Tamilnadu, India) which offers employment opportunities to the Harijan (untouchables) community. Ten Thousand Villages has purchased products from Palam Rural Centre since 2001.

I salute the laudable effort of the Ten Thousand Villages Fair Trade initiative, a sensible empowering effort toward poverty alleviation in economically challenged countries (not Third World; Who are the First and Second World???). I had the opportunity to visit the Tamil Nadu Region during my 2007 second trip to Coimbatore, India for the 5th Neem Foundation World Neem Conference. One will slightly grasp the multiple beneficial use of the neem unless one goes to India. From Ayurveda to religion, to mythology and folklore, to social rituals, the neem tree is present in all aspects of Indian daily life. Since ealry 1991, I have been influenced by the Indian holistic consideration of the “Village Pharmacy” and through Africa Bound Corporation, we are working on replicating the Indian neem success in Africa where neem has several eloges and gratifying names such as Tthe Cure for Forty diseases, and in Senegal (with about 30 million trees), The Independence Tree.
